Local Information

Stateline Fire Lookout - North Lake Tahoe

The name says it all.  Although it’s no longer used for this purpose, you really get the bird’s eye view with this short, but rewarding quater mile hike.  Take Reservoir Road, past the Biltmore.  Turn right at the former firehouse and look for a road off to the left.  Park along the road, but do not block the gate.  Bring snowshoes in the winter.

Summit Lake - Truckee hike

This is a perfect hike for a family. You’ll follow the PCT north and pass though a tunnel under Interstate 80. The sign to Summit Lake is not much farther and the trail is clearly marked. Once you reach the lake, you will find small trails that guide you to different areas of the lake. This is a great area for picnics and trout fishing and there are some campsites available.

Directions:
I-80 to Castle Peak exit. Go to the south side of the highway, and the east for ¼ mile to a sign for the Pacific Crest trail head. There are 3 other trails at this trail head.

Distance: 4 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy
Elevation: 7,200-7,400
Dogs permitted

Mount Rose - North Lake Tahoe hike

Mount Rose is one of North Lake Tahoe’s highest peaks at 10,778 feet and offers dramatic views of Reno, Washoe Valley, and the lake. Due to high winds during the afternoons, consider bringing layers to keep warm. The first 3 miles is an easy grade, dirt road, lined with the Tahoe’s indigenous pines, and a collection of mountain flora. At the halfway point, you’ll find a large meadow speckled with flowers and a pond that is great for a picnic. The last mile is a strenuous climb of rock and switchbacks, but the views are worth the effort. If you’re debating whether to tackle this peak or the west shore’s Mt Tallac, you might consider that Mt Rose is about 1300 feet less.
