Historic Truckee, CA is located in the Sierra Nevadas approximately 180 miles northeast of San Francisco and 40 miles west of Reno, NV. The town was named in 1844 after a Paiute Indian Chief whose name sounded like Tro-kay to the white men thus calling him Truckee. Truckee sits at an elevation of 5980 and has a population of just under 16,000 people. Covering 34 square miles it was first established in 1863 then incorporated in 1993.
Truckee is known for the famed Donner Party who attempted to cross Donner Summit late October in 1846. 47 of the 87 men, women and children perished while resorting to cannibalism. There are many activities involving the outdoors around Truckee: mt biking, road biking, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, rock climbing, white water kayaking, lake kayaking, rafting, boating, hiking, golfing, fishing, gaming, and swimming just to name a few. A few of the communities in the Truckee area are, Old Greenwood, Lahontan, Timilick, Martis Camp, Gray’s Crossing, Tahoe Donner, Donner Lake, Prosser Estates, Glenshire, Sierra Meadows, and Northstar.
